    Description

I have for sale Father Knickerbocker Cast Iron Bookends made by the Judd Company in the 1920’s. The bookends feature Father Knickerbocker in his richly upholstered chair reading in front of his beautiful bookshelves. He has on his powered wig, jacket with tails, vest, ascot, knickers and shoes with buckles.
Father Knickerbocker was used as a symbol for a New Yorker after Washington Irving published his satirical ‘A History of New York’ in 1809 under the pseudonym”Deidrich Knickerbocker”.
Each bookend stands 5 5/8 inches tall and 5 3/8 inches wide and 4 inches deep. They are quite heavy, each bookend weighing 5.9 lbs.
They are in very good original condition with most of its paint intact. These bookends were constructed using 2 molds. The base and bookshelves are one mold. Father Knickerbocker and chair is a separate casting in gray metal with a polychrome finish that shows some wear. The figures are attached to the base with screws. They are marked 9961 on the back.
